POPULATION: 38,000 GEOGRAPHY: Extremely varied; from near sea level in the western part of the county to over 8,000 feet in the east.

TOPOGRAPHY: Varies from flat valleys and rolling hills in the west to steep Sierra mountains and canyons in the east.

CLIMATE: Varies with topography; average yearly lows are in the 30's at lower elevations and 20's in the higher elevations. Average yearly highs are in the 90's in the lower elevations and the 70's and 80's in the higher elevations. Precipitation varies from 20 to 60 inches per year, Much of it is in the form of snow in the upper regions.
